UML (Unified Modeling Language) has been widely accepted by the industry as the lingua franca for modeling object-oriented systems.  In March of 1999, the Object Management Group (OMG) issued a Request for Proposals for a specification to define a UML Profile for Enterprise Distributed Object Computing (EDOC).  Since that time, a number of companies have participated in the development of proposals that are in the process of converging toward a single specification.  Preliminary proposals are currently available.  In addition, OMG has introduced the Model Driven Architecture (MDA).  MDA will redirect OMG efforts toward specifications expressed in UML and mapped to multiple technologies.   The UML Profile for EDOC is expected to become a key element of MDA, providing the specification meta-model for enterprise systems.  A final proposal of the UML Profile for EDOC was presented to the OMG in July of 2001, and will be subject to a task force vote in September..

The purpose of this workshop is to engage participation outside OMG and the specification submitter group to discuss how the UML profile might be refined, extended and incorporated in development tools, as well as to discuss related work that could leverage this profile.

Below are a number of specific areas that could be addressed by participants in this workshop:

·        Viewpoints: types and derivation

·        Mappings to specific technologies

·        Simulation and performance analysis

·        Modeling security

·        Run-time models

·        Marketable component specifications

·        Reusable model patterns

·        Technologies and architectures for implementation

·        Process modeling

·        Component design principles and constraints

·        Measures of model integrity and completeness

This is the first workshop on this topic and comes at an important point in the development of this technology.

 Workshop Goals:

The primary purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of the capabilities and limitations of the EDOC profile and to identify needs and opportunities for refinements, extensions and associated tools and techniques.   Participants will identify potential problems with the EDOC profile, present extensions and complementary models, discuss technology mapping issues, describe applicable tools and techniques and explore the impact of the EDOC profile on the development and management of enterprise systems.

 Workshop Organization:

The workshop will be conducted over the course of a full day. Sessions will be organized based on the subject matter of submissions.  Each session will consist of brief presentations from selected participants followed by open discussion on challenges, insights and issues for future consideration.  Time will be reserved at the end of the meeting to develop a summary of observations and results.

 Submission and Acceptance Criteria:

Interested participants are expected to have experience in the development of system models, development of modeling standards or development of tools for modeling or implementation of systems based on models.  Participants are expected to be able to contribute to discussion on the challenges, solutions and open issues in the development, enhancement and application of the UML profile for EDOC and related technology.

Potential participants are required to submit a position paper to the workshop chair demonstrating their ability to contribute to topics related to the workshop theme.  Electronic mail submissions will be greatly appreciated.

Please submit your position paper by August 15, 2001, so we can notify you of acceptance prior to the OOPSLA reduced registration cutoff date of September 6.

Position papers will be reviewed by the workshop committee and acceptance will be based on the relevance of the technical material and on the insight the participants would contribute to the workshop discussion.

 Expected number of participants:

 Maximum of 30.

 Pre-Workshop Activities:

The UML Profile for EDOC specifications is available on the OMG web site

Position papers will be made available on this web site .

 Post-Workshop Activities:

Results of the workshop will be presented at the OOPSLA poster session (assuming this practice is continued this year)

A summary will be posted to the web site.
